One after the other announcement Google i / o On Monday, including a major redesign Android 12, According to Statista, Google’s operating system for about 72% of the world’s phone users. For example, notifications are getting a facelift, there are Many new privacy features – including a dashboard – and it’s about to integrate better with Google’s Chrome OS platform.

As part of the bundle, Google is giving Android users more control over devices within their Android TV ecosystem. More specifically, Android will soon feature a built-in TV remote app Which makes it possible to control the TV using only your phone. (You won’t even need Android 12 to use it.) With over 80 million Android TV OS devices, it makes sense that Google would like to improve the overall experience with such a valuable feature.

The next time you lose your remote control, you won’t have to take the stress – just open the new remote app and keep streaming. Here’s what you need to know.

How do I get the new Android TV Remote feature?

Google will release the Android Remote feature for devices running Android 11 and above. This includes the recently revealed Android 12, which is currently only available. Is available via Public Android 12 Beta. Google has stated that the remote feature will not make its debut until later this year.

Here’s what the remote app looks like and how you can use it.

The top of the interface is a blank space that is used as a gesture pad, where you can swipe and tap your way around Android TV. Move between apps, choose a show, or return to the home screen with the onscreen controls. It seems that buttons to control volume and power are also included in the app.

But my favorite part is not going around Android TV, it’s the ability to type a username and password or use your phone’s keyboard to search shows. This is going to save everyone some time and headaches.

I can’t wait to get my hands on the new remote feature; Hopefully, this will happen as soon as possible.

Which Android phones are compatible?

The new Android remote will require specific hardware to work with your TV, but chances are that if you have a new Android phone and Android TV OS device, you’ll be fine. Here’s what we know so far.

  • Devices running Android 11 and above will be built in after the app is launched.
  • Almost all Android TV OS devices will have support for the built-in remote tool.

That’s all. As long as you have a phone with a TV remote app and a TV running Android TV OS, you’re good to go. Note that your Android TV OS device must have a system service called “atvremoteservice” installed. Some older Android TV OS devices (it is not clear) will not have access to the required service. For more information, we will have to wait till the launch of the feature, but I understand that almost all Android TV OS devices will work with this feature.
