Galaxy S21 Ultra’s 100x camera zoom is pointless, but 10x is incredible

Samsung’s Galaxy S21 Ultra, Which is With the rest of the Galaxy S21 lineup now available to buyWith its powerful processor, massive vibrant screen and 5G connectivity, it represents what the company can offer in a phone. But this is the camera setup I’m particularly interested in, and it’s here that the S21 Ultra pushed the boat out. There are four lenses on the back: a standard zoom, an ultraviolet lens, a 3x optical zoom and a 10x optical zoom. With the massive 108-megapixel resolution of the main camera, the phone can achieve 30x zoom. (All are here New Galaxy S21 Ultra Camera Feature And how to use them.)

TL; DR: This is the zoom that is the hero here. While the 30x results are still very poor, the ability of the phone to take shots at 10x optical zoom means that it can take images that aren’t possible on rival flagships such as iphone 12 pro or OnePlus 8T.

While I like it more Headline feature for Galaxy S21 Ultra, What’s still impressive here. And I saw in Edinburgh what the phone could do.

I started in the beautiful Dean Village, overlooking the river with this classic scene. Taken with the standard camera, the phone has captured a rich and vibrant scene, with plenty of detail in a very shady foreground.

Zooming in for a super-wide view, there is a slight noticeable change in colors, slightly beyond the magenta ting in the top right corner. It is a well-balanced shot and has plenty of details.

At 3x zoom, the Clock Tower looks pin-sharp and vibrant.

At 10x zoom, the image is still fully detailed, with beautiful contrast and no change in colors.

Andrew Hoyle / ClearTips

Things don’t look so good on 30x zoom. Yes, it is perfectly clear what a photo is, but its definition is lacking. It’s hard to get your shot in line when zoomed so far, but Samsung has a clever stabilization mode that helped me frame the entire watch face.

Andrew Hoyle / ClearTips

At its maximum 100x zoom, those details are even more soulful, resulting in an image that is really good as proof of what you’ve seen, such as rare wildlife. Yes, this is a novel feature that can be fun to try out, but for most people, the quality is not great for Instagram posts, for example.

Andrew Hoyle / ClearTips

The 10x zoom is the cutest position for me and is my favorite feature of the S21 Ultra’s camera. This allows you to capture photographic compositions that require a large telephoto zoom lens with DSLR. Zooming into this beach, I was able to show the swirling water, the concrete breakers scattered throughout the scene and the vivid walkers, adding amazing scale to the image.

Taken with a standard zoom lens, this shot at a golf course is not particularly exciting.

But activating the 10x zoom means completely changing the scene rather than focusing on the horizon of Edinburgh to clearly see the monuments on Calton Hill.

Andrew Hoyle / ClearTips

When zooming up to 100% on a 10x zoom image, it is clear that it does not have too much detail. In reality, images taken with 10x zoom are not of sufficient quality for printing – pristine quality zooming will remain the area of a DSLR with a telephoto lens, for now. That said, most of the shots that I took on 10x zoom, for posts on social media, or for messaging friends, are probably good enough to matter to most people what anyone does with their shots. Would like to do

The 10x zoom was enough to create details on this aircraft coming to the ground.

Nevertheless, cropping that image at 100% shows that there is a definite lack of fine detail when using this zoom level.

The super-wide lens captures a large amount of the scene and I’m really impressed by how vibrant and porous this image is.

Galaxy S21 Ultra, Night Mode.

Andrew Hoyle / ClearTips

Turning on the night mode, I was happy to see that the phone produces a bright and sharp image, even in a room that was extremely dark. The colors here are accurate and there is enough detail to be able to read the fine text on the candle. Impressive stuff.

It’s early days with the phone, but already I’m impressed at the shots I’ve received, most of which have excellent dynamic range and accurate colors on the images. The zoom is the standout feature here, but it is only effective up to a point. I like some shots that I have taken at 10x zoom, but the details are quite difficult nonetheless. Going beyond 10x reduces this by a huge amount and I still think the 100x space zoom is meaningless – I would have preferred that Samsung be able to make its time 10x zoom even better.
