Amex Adds Phone Damage Protection to its Credit Cards

American Express is going to add a benefit to many of its credit cards which will eliminate the question of whether you should pay for separate insurance on your smartphone. Start April 1 (don’t worry, this is not an April Fool), the cell phone protection plan will apply, covering two claims per year against stolen or damaged phones.

The good news is that damage coverage includes broken screens, perhaps the most common phone-related accident, and usually an expensive one as well. Amex says it will cover you up to a maximum of $ 1,600 per month, up to $ 800 for a claim. If you manage to break your brand-new Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, or even the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, it should still be enough.

Amex’s cell phone protection is available to anyone with its Platinum, Business Platinum, Centurion cards, and cards from Delta SkyMiles, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs. It will not charge for the service, unlike some of its accident and travel insurance coverage benefits. There is a $ 50 deductible for each claim that is accepted. However, an important point is that you will have to pay your phone bill with the Amex card, so if you want to take advantage of the cover, make sure that you are doing it.

It is often useless to pay extra for third-party insurance plans or extended warranties on smartphones. When spoke to Consumer Reports’ electronics editor a few years ago, we were told, “Reader surveys have repeatedly shown that extended warranties are not a good deal for most consumers,” but essentially for free. Getting one is different.

Remember though, if you are worried about breaking your phone, Amex’s $ 50 deduction can easily fund a case that can help avoid the problem at first. Take a look at our favorite iPhone 12 Pro cases, and the Samsung Galaxy S21 cases to find out what the popular phones are for and how much they cost.

That said, if you already have an AMEX card, it may be worth using it to pay your phone bill to provide additional assurance that if there is any damage to the device, it is economical. The form cannot be wasted.
