Amazfit T-Rex Pro Review: Waiting for Evolution

Amazfit t rex pro review pocket

“Amazfit T-Rex Pro is the same design as the promised and older version, but less battery than a reasonable price, reliable software, and robust activity tracking to stop this battery becoming extinct.”

  • Comprehensive activity tracking

  • Reliable, easy to use software

  • reasonably priced

  • Hard and water resistant

  • Battery life is not as advertised

  • No design change on previous model

Amazfit is making a name for itself with a range of competitively priced, attractive and easy-to-use smartwatches like the GTR2, and is now back with the Amazfit T-Rex Pro. This is a type of follow-up to the T-Rex from early 2020, but it is not the major evolutionary leap we would like to see after a year of waiting.

Repeating the same design over and over again (the Amazfit GT series all basically look the same) we don’t expect these days, and while it may help to keep the price down, it’s actually of great interest or Does not inspire enthusiasm. Let’s take a closer look at the T-Rex Pro to find out if we should ignore the lack of imagination, or if Amazfit needs your inspiration.

The design

Have you seen Amazfit T-Rex? Good, because the T-Rex Pro looks almost identical. A slight change has made a difference in the impression of the leaves of the watch, and that is the different bezel treatment. The T-Rex bezel on my review sample was black plastic and looked cheap and dirty. The T-Rex Pro’s beige is a contrasting gray color and has a “metallic-splash” effect added to it, and has a slightly classier styling than the older version.

Otherwise, the shape, size, and design are the same. The metal buttons have the same texture, the watches basically weigh 59 grams, the Pro’s 22mm silicon rubber strap has more texture but the same design, and the 1.3-inch AMOLED screen is the same size. It is 360 x 360 and it is the same. -Pixel resolution. They are the same.

The T-Rex Pro is designed for toughness with high and low temperatures, humidity, salt and shock resistance. It has passed 15 different tests compared to the T-Rex’s 12 tests, and has a 5ATM to 10ATM water resistance rating over the older T-Rex. What this all means is the Amazfit T-Rex Pro, a bit like the Casio G-Shock watch, complete with button guards and a 13.5mm thick polycarbonate case as well as some G-Shock-esque faces. It is also similar to the Honor Watch GS Pro, but it does not look or feel expensive.

Do i hate it? No. The strap is comfortable and there is a lot of adjustment for all wrist sizes (although the 48mm case is not really for small wrists). As someone who really likes G-Shock watches, I don’t completely mind the styling options, but many would see it as big, ugly, and uneven. It certainly lacks the go-with-everything class of the GTR2.

What I really have in mind for the T-Rex Pro is the T-Rex with just a different color bezel, and even the most optimistic would struggle to call it “brand-new”. I repeat that repeating the same design lowers the development cost, and therefore lower the final price, but does not generate any enthusiasm for repeating this advertisement, and is a serious problem for wearers in the competitive world .

Fitness and activity facilities

Now I have a moan about the design, of course we come to see that the T-Rex Pro upgrades over the T-Rex, and maybe see what makes this Pro. While the hardware has the most significant upgrades on older smartwatches, they rarely make large-scale changes. The heart rate sensor has been upgraded to Amazfit’s BioTracker 2 PPG optical sensor, and the Watch now has a 3-axis gyroscope, and also a barometer to go with the 3-Axis Accelerometer.

The upgraded Biotracker 2 sensor also takes Sp02 blood oxygen readings, and the Amazfit Watch supports 100 different workout modes, but is a software update feature found on the GTR2E instead of the T-Rex Pro. The sensor upgrade has allowed Amazfit to include some of the best new fitness tracking software features, which are surprisingly in-depth on the watch, and in the accompanying Zepp app.

Tracking a 30-minute exercise session gives the expected timeout, calorie burn, and average heart rate, but you also get more specific data such as rhythm, average stride, speed, altitude changes, and heart rate zones. Once you do this it provides the recommended recovery time with VO2 Max data, and the data is sorted using FirstBeat’s algorithm. It is comprehensive and mostly easy to understand, and I like that it can all be seen on the watch without having to go to the app on your phone.

FirstBeat training impact data highlight a common fitness tracker problem. It provides graphs showing your training load as well as your aerobic training effect and anaerobic training effect, all of which are very interesting, but very little on what to do with the data or how to interpret it properly. Information is there. To search for more information, I went to FirstBeat’s own website, but I found that no one really understood what was there.

It is likely that this data will be more useful, or perhaps more familiar, to athletes or those dedicated to certain sports, but for casual use, it goes much deeper without adequate explanation. Otherwise, activity-related upgrades on the T-Rex Pro have improved it on older models, but they will need it along with other improvements to make it a highly desirable upgrade.

Using T-Rex Pro

The T-Rex Pro uses Amazfit’s RTOS software, not Google’s Wear OS. It is quick to respond, smooth scrolling for the most part, and the menu system is logically determined. It works via screen tap and swipe, as well as very sensible physical buttons. There are four, labeled up, down, back and select. They do what you expect, and are enough to cope with big fingers.

It is more reliable with notifications than the wearer’s OS, although text is basic and there is no way to respond to or interact with messages on the watch. There is always an effective on-screen for each face of the watch, I like the extensive weather reports and I’m sure climbers will appreciate the barometer’s data as well, it also controls the music on my phone. The best thing is that I have not experienced any instability or software problems.

Heart rate tracking appears to be accurate with the results given by the T-Rex Pro, which corresponds to the numbers on the Apple Watch Series 6.. However it is not as fast as the Apple Watch to measure your heart rate. Sp02 also takes longer to deliver blood oxygen readings, but gives the same results as most Apple Watch Series 6, but this information is not very useful for anyone who is not half on a mountain and worried about altitude sickness is.

I compared the T-Rex Pro to the Apple Watch at a 30-minute walk, where it matched the average heart rate, but there were about 200 step count discrepancies, with the T-Rex counting less steps than the Apple Watch . It is estimated to have a high calorie burn. Although neither is likely to recover at all, the Apple Watch is recognized as one of the most accurate for heart rate and step count data, but the T-Rex Pro’s difference is not drastic.

The Zepp app is the same as it is on the Amazfit GTR 2 and GTR 2e, and it works with both Android and iOS. It combines your activity data, lets you customize clock functions, select applications to send information, and update software. It is solidly connected during my review period. Overall, the software of the Amazfit T-Rex Pro, and the proprietary experience in turn, is very good.

The battery

If the software is good, then what about the battery? This is not so good, and certainly does not live up to the promises of Amazfit, at least if you intend to use the features included in it. The company says that the 390mAh battery – similar to the one in the T-Rex, indefinitely – will last 18 days with typical usage, and nine days of heavy usage. Always on-screen active, with heart rate and stress monitoring, two 30-minute workout tracks, and general notifications alerts, the T-Rex Pro’s battery lasted for six days. I do not consider it to be of heavy use, as I have not tracked GPS, or hours of workouts.

I could always turn off the on-screen and heart rate monitoring, which would extend battery life (though I’d be very surprised if it was suddenly able to reach 18 days), but what’s the point? You buy a watch to use the features, not pretend like they don’t exist. In my experience Amazefit has such a long battery life claims over the T-Rex Pro and other Amazfit Vrables, overly optimistic.

Price and availability

The Amazfit T-Rex Pro costs $ 180 or 139 British pounds, and is available to purchase through Amazfit’s own website. It is covered by a one-year warranty and comes with a 30-day trial period.

Take us

The complete lack of imagination put into the design of the T-Rex Pro is disappointing. There is no requirement for this to look similar to the previous model released a year ago, especially since the original was hardly a classic design, and the hardware upgrades here are only minor. This turns out to be a rather lazy update from a company to attract new buyers. If you didn’t like the look of the T-Rex – and involuntarily, many people I didn’t talk to – you wouldn’t like the T-Rex Pro.

There is nothing to say, “Oh, this is the new T-Rex Pro” on the outside and it’s a shame, because the software, performance and activity tracking are so good. In many ways, the T-Rex Pro Wear OS provides a better general experience to the smartwatch, and the lower price makes it very enticing. Style aside, the main downside here is battery life. Six days is not bad considering normal usage, but it doesn’t meet AmazFit’s claims, or matches a smartwatch like the Huawei Watch GT2 Pro, either, or most fitness trackers.

Perhaps you are not so much entrenched in the design aspect as I am and following a smartwatch focusing on external pricing. In which case, T-Rex Pro will do everything you want, AmazeFit tells you with more trips than just the charger.

Is there a better option?

The price of the T-Rex Pro is very competitive. For example, the Honor Watch GS Pro 250 is British Pound, and has very similar functionality, although the materials used give it a high-class feel. Our recommended smartwatches, without ruthlessness, all cost a lot. The Apple Watch SE starts at $ 279, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 at $ 330, and the Mobvoi Ticwatch Pro 3 at $ 300.

If you’re not worried about the tough exterior, the Amazfit’s GTR 2e has similar features inside the more fashionable, slimmer case and costs just $ 140. If the features of a smartwatch are of less concern, then a fitness tracker may be better for you. If you like the G-Shock style, then just get the G-Shock watch. The G-Shock Move GBD-H1000 is $ 400 and has extensive activity tracking features, plus it is hard to recover.

Finally, the T-Rex can still be found for sale online, and is priced at around $ 140 but can be found for less. Yes, hardware additions are welcome, but if you want a tough smartwatch and don’t spend too much to do so, it is very similar otherwise.

How long will this last?

The T-Rex Pro’s rigidity means that it will withstand considerable punishment, so if you’re going to wear it in a harsh environment, it shouldn’t break at the first sign of water or dust. Provided Amazfit continues to support the Zepp app and software on the watch, it will last for a few years.

However I think the design will date quickly, and in the case of polycarbonate there will likely be scratches and scratches over time if you use it, which means you feel the need to replace it soon can do.

Should you buy it

Yes, the T-Rex Pro may be very similar to the older model, but it is still a well-priced, feature-rich smartwatch.
