2021 Mercedes-AMG E53 Cabriolet review: High-tech and handsome

The E53 is a seriously fast drift.

Generally, I shy away from the Mercedes-AMG convertible. AMGs are usually a little too stiff and effigy for my taste, and are not really in the sense of what I want in a luxury convertible. The AMG E53 is different, however. In fact, it is one of my favorite cars that I have driven so far this year.

The heart of the E53 is its AMG-tuned 3.0-liter turbocharged I6 engine with mild-hybrid assist. It certainly lacks the guttural heavy-metal ogre grille of AMG’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, but it makes up for it in its upper rave range with amazing smoothness and surprisingly pleasing yolks. The E53 is the most powerful E-Class convertible you can get, by the way; There is no E63 available.

The i6 engine makes a healthy 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque with no perceptible delay in power, largely thanks to the EQ-boost mild-hybrid system. Not only does the EQ-Boost smooth the start-stop operation, but its electric motors provide enough complementary boost – 21 hp and 184 lb-ft – to move the E53 until the turbocharger is at full boil . 60 mph takes a fast 4.4 seconds, which is great for a convertible of 4,566 pounds.

The E53’s engine is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. It is left to its own devices when called through steering wheel-mounted paddles and provides crisp upshift and downshift.

An additional benefit of this small-displacement, electrically assisted engine is fuel economy. The EPA city has a rate of 21 miles per gallon, 27 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined 2021 Mercedes-AMG E53 Cabriolet, which I have no trouble matching in regular driving.

Being a heavy, midsize convertible, the E53 isn’t exactly sports-car fast, but it’s not a bad thing. The E53’s suspension does an excellent job of smooth the bumpy paths even in its most aggressive Sport Plus mode, and the convertible has noticeable differences in ride quality between the Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus suspension settings. The steering is precise and well-weighted, although in Sport Plus mode, it feels unnecessarily heavy. Large, multistone brakes are easy to modulate and facilitate in most situations to prevent power, although they fade after a spirited drive.

The updated E-Class’s interior is the best in the business, and it complements the Cabriolet. Fit and finish and material options are all top-notch and befitting of the car on the E53’s price range (later). The sporty AMG seats are very comfortable and have a lot of adjustability, so anyone of my size – 6 feet, 4 inches – can be comfortable without much trial and error.

The massive digital instrument panel and infotainment screen look great, offering you all the information you want in a clear and sensible way. Both screens completely define the look and feel of the E53’s interior, and that’s a good thing. Smaller screens on steering-wheel mounted controls are also a cool touch, allowing you to adjust frequently used items such as the manual mode of transmission or the sport exhaust / off switch. All of this makes the E53 feel technologically advanced and modern.

The Tech’s cornerstone of the E53 is its MBUX information system, which provides cabin control (such as heat and stereo volume) as well as powerful natural-speech recognition for the sconce Apple carplay And Android Auto. With its colorful, crisp imagery, the MBUX is one of my favorite information systems available today.

I also cannot talk about the interior of the E53 Cabriolet without talking about the air scarf. For those who have never experienced this feature, it is basically a small space heater that lives in each front headrest, which flows hot air over your neck. This makes cool-weather, top-down motoring a breeze (the purpose of punishment). It is fantastic, and I find myself using it all the time.

Unfortunately, not all of this goodness comes cheap. The 2021 Mercedes-AMG E53 Cabriolet starts at $ 83545, which includes a $ 995 destination fee, and my highly equipped tester comes in a hair for just under $ 105,000. Let’s face it, it’s a lot of money. Mercedes’ convertibles have always taken a heavy premium, and the E53 is no different.

With air scarves, you can drive up and down throughout the year.

As a competitive set, the E53 is a variant in its own class. The Audi S5 Convertible is smaller, less powerful and less expensive – in fact, it competes with Merck’s own AMG C43 Cabriolet. The Lexus LC Convertible starts at $ 101,000 and features a luxurious, naturally aspirated V8, but lacks Merc’s technology. The BMW 8 Series is quite large. And honestly, I’ll take the E53 over all of these.

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG E53 Cabriolet is a luxurious luxury convertible that offers good looks, great technology and excellent street manners, but is expensive. Again, if you are shopping for a car in this segment, you are probably not looking for a great value. Price tag aside, there is little to dislike about the beautiful AMG E53.
