When you are a brand like Ferrari, every change has a certain importance. In the case of the 2021 Ferrari Portofino M, even with the addition of a letter. M means “modificata”, which in Italian means “modified”. But it actually means something else: more performance.

For this year, Portofino Wholesale adopts the drivetrain from its beloved coupe cousin, Ferrari Roma. The twin-turbo, 3.9-liter V8 is a great engine, offering around 20 more ponies than the outgoing lump. It is now mated to a new, eight-speed, dual-clutch transmission, again like the Roma – and also likes SF90 Stradale. This is good company.

In a car like this, the extra power is not really such a big thing, but the increased response of the engine, aided by the revised gear ratios, makes it an incredibly enjoyable thing to drive. The Portofino M is meant to be more relaxed of Ferrari’s offerings, but once I finally get out of the gloom of Miami for my test drive, on some open roads at the end, it’s quite clear that this particular Se is not a relaxed tourer.

Even with the wheel-mounted drive selector set to wet mode, I use quite a lot during frequent Floridian showers, the car barks and spins its tires easily, flipping its tail a good one. Kicks in a way that wants to play. Dial things up for the game or, new for this year, Race, and things get wild as anticipated.

The addition of the race may seem like a strange thing for a very street-oriented convertible, but it is a welcome change. I usually race Ferrari’s Sport mode to be a little too wild for a very quiet and casually spirited driving. Portofino M also enhances those with Comfort Mode, giving enough spreads to match my every mood.

I am happy to state that this is the only major change with the steering wheel of the Portofino. It has not received the touch-sensitive mess that I hated roma. Every input here is pleasantly tactile and, finding the right turn signal when the wheel is rotated is as confusing as ever, it’s a small price to pay to be able to toggle the lights, wipers, and All you need is a finger with a twitch.

The car receives some serious technological upgrades, however, including an adaptive cruise, which is a Godsend for Florida’s consistently pathetic traffic, and a surround-view camera system slots this long-nosed machine into an air slot in parking lots . The most amazing update for me is something I thought might never happen: Android auto. Yes, Ferrari has finally opened the door to Google, and thank God, because the underlying navigation experience here is … basic.

But you probably don’t care much about it. How does it drive? fabulous. As I mentioned above, the engine is a willing participant and, while the transmission in the auto is sometimes a bit more sleek and sluggish, a quick access to the clear shift paddle resolves that issue very well. Blasting through the gears produces a spectacular noise, it is easy to appreciate from top to bottom.

The power-powered hardtop accelerates or falls to about 30 mph in about 15 seconds, but I recommend taking precautions before using it at a speed. While the top is working the trunk is wide open, meaning anything there can be loose and will fly away. (Ask me how I know.) Pack carefully.

Top tuck under a scrambled ton that flows well into the trunk and, if you bend over, you can make two rear seats provided here by Ferrari. They are perfect for any leggy companion that you think is taking you for a ride.

While I love the performance of the Portofino M, I’m really surprised at how good a cruiser it is. The car is not penalizing on isolation joints on Florida highways, the seats are very comfortable and, while the engine has a slight drone, it is easily forgiven when 612 horses pay off. Buffeting from top to bottom has nothing to do with it, and with top to top, you’ll almost never know you’re in a convertible.

And now for the part where I tell you how much you will pay for this enjoyment. The 2021 Ferrari Portofino M has a starting price of $ 226,000, including a $ 3,950 destination, which is a little over $ 20,000 compared to the previous model.
